Scene 1 · Beginner

Dorința de a avea un copil

A wish for a child

English translation

A woman longed very much for a child, but her wish did not come true. At last, she went to a fairy and asked how she could find a little child.

Romanian

— E ușor, a răspuns zâna.

English translation

“It’s easy,” the fairy replied. “Take this barley grain, put it in a flowerpot, and see what happens. It isn’t an ordinary grain, like the ones that grow in the fields and chickens eat.”

English translation

The woman thanked her and paid twelve shillings for the grain.
