Scene 1 · Intermediate

Dorința de a avea un copil

A wish for a child

English translation

Once upon a time, there was a woman who wanted a little child with all her heart, but her wish did not come true. At last, she went to a fairy and asked her to help.

English translation

“I wish so much that I could have a little child! Can you tell me where I might find one?”

English translation

“That can be easily arranged,” the fairy replied. “Take this grain of barley. It is a different kind from the barley that grows in the fields and that chickens eat. Put it in a flowerpot and see what happens.”

Romanian

Femeia i-a mulțumit și i-a plătit doisprezece șilingi, atât cât costa bobul.

English translation

The woman thanked her and paid her twelve shillings, which was what the grain cost.
