In un paese lontano vive un re con undici figli maschi e una figlia, Elisa. I principi studiano con matite di diamante e tavolette d'oro. Elisa ha un bellissimo libro di figure. I dodici bambini vivono felici nel palazzo.
In a distant country, a king lives with his eleven sons and one daughter, Elisa. The princes study with diamond pencils and golden tablets. Elisa has a beautiful picture book. The twelve children live happily in the palace.
Un giorno il padre sposa una regina cattiva. La nuova moglie del re diventa la loro matrigna e non vuole bene ai bambini. Loro lo capiscono subito. Durante la festa delle nozze, aspettano dolci e mele, come sempre. Invece la regina dà loro una tazza piena di sabbia.
One day, their father marries an evil queen. The king’s new wife becomes their stepmother, and she does not love the children. They understand this right away. During the wedding feast, they wait for sweets and apples, as always. Instead, the queen gives them a cup full of sand.

“Pretend it’s a cake,” she says.
