English translation
In a distant land, there lived a king with eleven sons and a daughter named Elisa. The boys were princes and studied with diamond pencils and gold slates. Elisa had a beautiful picture book worth as much as half a kingdom. The children lived happily.

Mas o pai se casou com uma rainha malvada, que não gostava delas. Logo depois do casamento, houve uma grande festa no palácio. As crianças brincavam de receber visitas e esperavam ganhar bolos e maçãs, como sempre. A nova rainha, porém, deu a elas uma xícara de areia e mandou que fingissem que era bolo.
English translation
But their father married a wicked queen who did not like them. Soon after the wedding, there was a great feast at the palace. The children played at receiving visitors and expected to get cakes and apples, as they always did. But the new queen gave them a cup of sand and told them to pretend it was cake.
