Begravelsen til Karens mor
Karen's mother's funeral
English translation
Karen was a pretty little girl who grew up in poverty. In summer she went barefoot. In winter she had to wear large wooden clogs that rubbed against her insteps until the skin turned bright red.
English translation
An old shoemaker’s wife lived in the middle of the village. She got out a few scraps of red cloth and sewed a pair of little shoes for Karen as best she could. The shoes came out clunky, but the gift was well meant.
English translation
Karen wore them for the first time on the day her mother was buried. Red shoes hardly went with the clothes people wore to a funeral, but Karen had no others. She slipped her bare feet into the shoes and followed the plain coffin.
