Karen era una niña bonita y delicada, pero muy pobre. En verano tenía que caminar descalza; en invierno usaba unos grandes zapatos de madera que le dejaban enrojecida la parte superior de los pies.
Karen was a pretty, delicate girl, but very poor. In summer, she had to walk barefoot; in winter, she wore big wooden shoes that left the tops of her feet red.
La esposa de un viejo zapatero decidió hacerle un regalo. Cosió unos zapatitos con retazos de tela roja. No eran elegantes, pero los había confeccionado lo mejor que pudo y con buena intención.
The wife of an old shoemaker decided to give her a gift. She sewed a pair of little shoes from scraps of red cloth. They weren’t elegant, but she had made them as well as she could, with good intentions.
Karen los recibió el día del funeral de su madre. El rojo no era apropiado para el luto, pero no tenía otros. Metió en ellos sus pies descalzos y siguió el humilde ataúd.
Karen received them on the day of her mother’s funeral. Red was not suitable for mourning, but she had no other shoes. She put her bare feet into them and followed the simple coffin.
