Era uma vez uma menina bonita e delicada chamada Karen. Sua família era tão pobre que, no verão, ela precisava andar descalça. No inverno, usava grandes tamancos de madeira, que machucavam e deixavam vermelha a parte de cima dos seus pezinhos.
Once upon a time there was a pretty, delicate girl named Karen. Her family was so poor that in summer she had to go barefoot. In winter, she wore large wooden clogs, which hurt and made the tops of her little feet red.
No centro da aldeia morava a mulher de um velho sapateiro. Querendo ajudar Karen, ela juntou alguns retalhos velhos de tecido vermelho e fez um par de sapatinhos. Não ficaram bem-feitos, mas tinham sido feitos com boa intenção.
In the center of the village lived the wife of an old shoemaker. Wanting to help Karen, she gathered some old scraps of red cloth and made a pair of little shoes. They weren’t well made, but they had been made with good intentions.
Karen recebeu os sapatos e os usou pela primeira vez no funeral da mãe. Vermelho não era uma cor adequada para o luto, mas ela não tinha outro par. Por isso, calçou os sapatinhos sem meias e caminhou atrás do caixão simples de sua mãe.
Karen received the shoes and wore them for the first time at her mother’s funeral. Red wasn’t a suitable color for mourning, but she didn’t have another pair. So she put on the little shoes without socks and walked behind her mother’s simple coffin.
