Pogrzeb matki Karen
Karen's mother's funeral
English translation
Once upon a time, there lived a little girl named Karen. She was lovely and delicate, but so poor that she went barefoot in summer. In winter, she wore large wooden clogs that rubbed her little feet until their insteps turned red.
English translation
An old shoemaker’s wife lived in the middle of the village. She gathered scraps of red cloth and sewed them into little shoes for Karen. She did the best she could, though the shoes turned out clumsy. Still, she wanted to do something kind for the girl.
English translation
Karen wore this gift for the first time on the day of her mother’s funeral. The red shoes were not suitable for mourning, but she had no other shoes. She slipped her bare feet into them and followed the plain coffin.
