A fost odată o fetiță frumoasă și delicată, pe nume Karen. Era atât de săracă, încât vara umbla desculță, iar iarna purta saboți mari de lemn. Aceștia îi frecau partea de sus a picioarelor până i se înroșea pielea.
Once upon a time, there was a beautiful, delicate little girl named Karen. She was so poor that she went barefoot in summer and wore large wooden clogs in winter. They rubbed the tops of her feet until her skin turned red.
În mijlocul satului locuia soția bătrână a unui cizmar. Din câteva bucăți vechi de stofă roșie, ea a cusut pentru Karen o pereche de pantofiori. Nu erau prea bine lucrați, dar femeia îi făcuse cu multă bunăvoință, așa cum se pricepuse.
In the middle of the village lived the old wife of a shoemaker. From a few scraps of old red cloth, she sewed a pair of little shoes for Karen. They were not very well made, but the woman had made them with great kindness, as best she could.
Karen i-a purtat pentru prima oară la înmormântarea mamei sale. Roșul nu era potrivit pentru doliu, însă fata nu avea alți pantofi. Și-a strecurat picioarele goale în ei și a mers în urma sicriului simplu.
Karen wore them for the first time at her mother’s funeral. Red was not suitable for mourning, but the girl had no other shoes. She slipped her bare feet into them and walked behind the plain coffin.
