One day God said to Jonah, the son of Amittai, “Go to the great city of Nineveh and warn the people there. I’ve seen how wicked their actions are.”
Jonah set out, but he meant to flee from God. He went down to Joppa, where he found a ship bound for Tarshish. He paid for the passage and went aboard to sail to Tarshish, away from God.
