Un pauvre bûcheron vivait près d’une forêt avec ses enfants, Hansel et Gretel, et leur belle-mère. Une grande famine a frappé le pays. Ils n’avaient presque plus de pain. Une nuit, le père demandait comment nourrir les enfants. Sa femme voulait les abandonner au fond de la forêt avec un feu et un peu de pain.
English translation
A poor woodcutter lived near a forest with his children, Hansel and Gretel, and their stepmother. A great famine struck the country. They had almost no bread left. One night, the father was wondering how to feed the children. His wife wanted to abandon them deep in the forest with a fire and a little bread.

Le père a d’abord refusé : les bêtes sauvages pourraient les tuer. Mais sa femme répétait qu’ils mourraient tous les quatre s’ils gardaient les enfants. Il a fini par accepter, le cœur plein de peine.
English translation
At first, the father refused: wild animals might kill them. But his wife kept saying that all four of them would die if they kept the children. In the end, he agreed, with a heavy heart.
