English translation
Near a large forest lives a poor woodcutter with his wife and their two children, Hansel and Gretel. The woman is their stepmother. There is little food in the village, and the family has almost run out of bread. One night, the father cannot sleep because he is so worried.

English translation
“How will we feed the children?” he asks his wife. “We don’t have anything left for ourselves, either.”

La donna propone di portarli nel bosco la mattina seguente. Vuole accendere un fuoco, dare loro del pane e poi lasciarli soli. Così i bambini non potranno ritrovare la strada di casa.
English translation
The woman suggests taking the children into the forest the next morning. She wants to light a fire, give them some bread, and then leave them alone. That way, the children won’t be able to find their way home.

“No, I can’t do that,” the father says. “The animals in the forest could kill them!”
