Terv a gyerekek elhagyására
A plan to leave the children
Hungarian
Egy nagy erdő mellett élt egy szegény favágó a feleségével és két gyerekével. A fiút Jancsinak, a lányt Juliskának hívták. Az asszony a gyerekek mostohaanyja volt. Az országban kevés volt az étel, és az apa már kenyeret sem tudott szerezni a családjának. Az apa éjszaka nem tudott aludni az aggodalomtól.
English translation
A poor woodcutter lived beside a great forest with his wife and two children. The boy was called Hansel, and the girl Gretel. The woman was the children’s stepmother. Food was scarce in the country, and the father could no longer get bread for his family. At night, the father couldn’t sleep because he was so worried.
Hungarian
– Hogyan adjunk enni a gyerekeknek? Már nekünk sincs semmink – mondta a feleségének.
English translation
“How are we going to feed the children? We have nothing left ourselves,” he said to his wife.
Hungarian
Az asszony azt akarta, hogy másnap vigyék be a gyerekeket az erdő mélyére. Ott adnak nekik kenyeret, tüzet raknak, aztán egyedül hagyják őket. Onnan nem találják meg a hazavezető utat.
English translation
The woman wanted them to take the children deep into the forest the next day. They would give them bread, light a fire, and then leave them alone. The children wouldn’t find their way home from there.
Hungarian
– Ezt nem tehetem meg! – mondta az apa. – A vadállatok megölik őket.
English translation
“I can’t do that!” the father said. “The wild animals will kill them.”
Hungarian
– Akkor mind a négyen éhen halunk! – felelte az asszony.
English translation
“Then all four of us will starve to death!” the woman replied.
Hungarian
Addig ismételte ezt, amíg a férje végül beleegyezett. Az apa nagyon sajnálta a gyerekeket.
English translation
She kept repeating this until her husband finally agreed. The father felt very sorry for the children.
