En plan att överge barnen

A plan to leave the children

English translation

Near a large forest lived a poor woodcutter with his two children, Hansel and Gretel, and their stepmother. When food became scarce throughout the land, their father could no longer get bread for the family. One night he lay awake, wondering how they would manage.

English translation

“Tomorrow we’ll take the children deep into the forest,” said the stepmother. “We’ll light a fire and give them some bread. Then we’ll leave. They won’t be able to find their way home from there.”

English translation

Their father did not want to leave the children alone. He was afraid that wild animals would kill them. But the stepmother said that all four of them would starve if the children stayed at home. In the end, he agreed to her plan, although he felt sorry for the children.
