Scene 1 · Beginner
En plan om at efterlade børnene
A plan to leave the children
English translation
A poor woodcutter lived near a large forest. He lived with his two children, Hansel and Gretel, and his wife. She was the children’s stepmother. When food grew scarce in the country, the family soon had too little to eat. One night, the father lay awake and talked to his wife about it.
English translation
“Tomorrow we’ll take the children deep into the forest,” she said. “We’ll light a fire and give them a little bread. Then we’ll go and leave them there. They won’t find their way home again.”
Danish
Faren sagde nej.
English translation
The father said no. He was afraid that wild animals would kill the children. But his wife kept saying that all four of them would starve if the children stayed home. In the end he agreed, even though it made him very sad.
