Plan porzucenia dzieci
A plan to leave the children
English translation
A poor woodcutter lived near a great forest with his wife and their two children. The boy was called Hansel, and the girl was called Gretel. The woodcutter’s wife was their stepmother. There was little food in the country, and the father could no longer find bread for his family. One night, he could not sleep because he was worried about the children.
English translation
“How will we feed them if we have nothing to eat ourselves?” he asked his wife.
Polish
Macocha chciała rano zaprowadzić dzieci głęboko do lasu. Mieli tam rozpalić ognisko, dać dzieciom po kawałku chleba i odejść. Dzieci nie znalazłyby drogi do domu.
English translation
The stepmother wanted to take the children deep into the forest in the morning. They were to light a fire there, give each child a piece of bread, and leave. The children would not be able to find their way home.
Polish
– Nie zrobię tego – powiedział ojciec. – W lesie dzikie zwierzęta mogą je zabić.
English translation
“I won’t do it,” the father said. “Wild animals in the forest might kill them.”
English translation
The woman replied that otherwise the whole family would starve to death. She kept saying this until the woodcutter agreed. But he still felt very sorry for the children.
