Karen's mother's funeral
English translation
Once upon a time, there was a beautiful, slender little girl named Karen. She was so poor that she walked barefoot in summer. In winter she wore large wooden shoes that rubbed her feet and made them turn red.
English translation
In the center of the village lived a shoemaker's elderly wife. She sewed a pair of little shoes for Karen from old pieces of red cloth. They were not particularly beautiful, but she had made them with good intentions, as well as she could.
English translation
Karen wore them for the first time at her mother's funeral. The red shoes were not suitable for mourning, but she had no others. So she walked behind the simple coffin in them.
