The Philistines gathered their army at Socoh, in the territory of Judah, and camped at Ephes-dammim, between Socoh and Azekah. They were preparing for battle against Israel.
King Saul also gathered his men. The Israelites set up camp in the Valley of Elah and took their positions opposite the Philistines. The two armies occupied the hills on opposite sides of the valley: the Philistines on one side, and Israel on the other. The valley lay between them.
