Filistyni zgromadzili wojska w Soko, na ziemiach Judy, przygotowując się do bitwy. Rozbili obóz między Soko a Azeką, w miejscu zwanym Efes-Dammim. Tymczasem król Saul zebrał Izraelitów w dolinie Ela i ustawił ich do walki z Filistynami.
English translation
The Philistines gathered their armies at Socoh, in the land of Judah, preparing for battle. They camped between Socoh and Azekah, at a place called Ephes-dammim. Meanwhile, King Saul gathered the Israelites in the Valley of Elah and drew them up to fight the Philistines.

English translation
The two armies occupied hills on opposite sides. The Philistines stood on one, the Israelites on the other, with a valley between them.
