Den onde stemoren

The wicked stepmother

English translation

Far away, in the land the swallows fly to for the winter, lived a king with eleven sons and a daughter named Elisa. The princes went to school with stars on their chests and swords at their sides. They wrote with diamond styluses on gold tablets and learned their lessons in an instant.

English translation

Elisa sat on a stool made of mirrored glass and looked through a picture book that had cost half a kingdom.

English translation

The children were happy until their father remarried. The new queen did not like them at all, and they found that out the very day after the wedding. While the festivities at the castle were still going on, they played at receiving guests. They usually got the leftover cakes and apples.

English translation

This time their stepmother handed them a teacup with a little sand in it and told them to pretend it was cake.
