Dawno temu żyła mała dziewczynka o imieniu Karen. Była ładna, ale bardzo biedna. Latem chodziła boso, a zimą nosiła duże drewniane buty, które raniły jej stopy.
Long ago, there lived a little girl named Karen. She was pretty but very poor. In summer she went barefoot, and in winter she wore large wooden shoes that hurt her feet.
Pewnego dnia stara żona szewca uszyła dla niej trzewiczki ze starych kawałków czerwonego materiału. Nie były zbyt ładne, ale kobieta chciała pomóc dziewczynce.
One day, the shoemaker’s elderly wife sewed her little shoes from old pieces of red cloth. They weren’t very pretty, but the woman wanted to help the girl.
Karen włożyła je po raz pierwszy na pogrzeb matki. Czerwone trzewiczki nie pasowały do tej smutnej uroczystości, ale Karen nie miała innych butów. Szła w nich za trumną matki.
Karen wore them for the first time at her mother’s funeral. The red shoes were not suitable for such a sad occasion, but Karen had no other shoes. She walked behind her mother’s coffin.
