A fost odată o fetiță frumoasă pe nume Karen. Era foarte săracă. Vara mergea desculță, iar iarna purta încălțăminte mare din lemn, care îi înroșea picioarele.
Once upon a time, there was a beautiful little girl named Karen. She was very poor. In summer she went barefoot, and in winter she wore large wooden shoes that made her feet red.
În sat locuia soția bătrână a unui cizmar. Ea a făcut pentru Karen o pereche de pantofi din bucăți vechi de stofă roșie. Nu erau foarte bine lucrați, dar femeia îi făcuse cu drag.
The elderly wife of a shoemaker lived in the village. She made Karen a pair of shoes from old pieces of red cloth. They were not very well made, but the woman had made them with love.
Karen i-a purtat prima dată la înmormântarea mamei sale. Pantofii roșii nu erau potriviți pentru o zi atât de tristă, dar fata nu avea alții. S-a încălțat cu ei și a mers în urma sicriului mamei.
Karen wore them for the first time at her mother’s funeral. The red shoes were not right for such a sad day, but the girl had no others. She put them on and walked behind her mother’s coffin.
