En plan om at efterlade børnene
A plan to leave the children
English translation
At the edge of a great forest lived a poor woodcutter with his wife and his two children, Hansel and Gretel. When food grew scarce in the country, there came a point when their father couldn’t even get enough bread for the family. One night he lay awake, tossing and turning with worry.
English translation
“What will become of us?” he sighed. “How will we find food for the children when we barely have any for ourselves?”
English translation
“Listen,” said his wife, who was the children’s stepmother. “Early tomorrow morning we’ll take them where the forest is thickest. We’ll light a fire and give them each a piece of bread. Then we’ll go to work and leave them behind. They’ll never find their way home again.”
English translation
“I can’t do that,” said their father. “How could I leave my children alone? The wild animals will find them and tear them to pieces.”
English translation
“Then you might as well get the boards ready for our coffins,” she replied. “Otherwise all four of us will starve to death.”
English translation
She kept at him until he gave in. “I still feel sorry for the poor children, though,” he said.
