Karen was a poor little girl. In summer she went barefoot. In winter she wore large wooden clogs that made her feet red.
An old woman in the village sewed Karen a pair of shoes out of red cloth. The shoes weren’t very fancy, but the woman had made them to help her. Karen wore them for the first time to her mother’s funeral. Red shoes weren’t appropriate for a funeral, but she had no others.
So she put them on and walked behind her mother’s coffin.
