Karen era una niña bonita y pobre. En verano caminaba descalza. En invierno llevaba unos grandes zapatos de madera que le dejaban rojos los pies.
Karen was a pretty, poor girl. In summer, she walked barefoot. In winter, she wore large wooden shoes that made her feet red.
La esposa de un zapatero quiso ayudarla. Le hizo unos zapatos con trozos de tela roja. No eran muy bonitos, pero la mujer los había cosido con cariño. Karen los estrenó en el funeral de su madre. El rojo no era adecuado para aquella ocasión, pero no tenía otros zapatos. Con ellos caminó detrás del ataúd.
A shoemaker’s wife wanted to help her. She made her shoes from pieces of red cloth. They weren’t very pretty, but the woman had sewn them with care and affection. Karen wore them for the first time at her mother’s funeral. Red wasn’t right for the occasion, but she had no other shoes. She walked behind the coffin in them.
