Karen var en liten flicka som bodde i en by. Hon var fattig. På sommaren gick hon barfota, och på vintern fick hon ha stora träskor som gjorde ont.
Karen was a little girl who lived in a village. She was poor. In the summer she went barefoot, and in the winter she had to wear big wooden clogs that hurt her feet.
En gammal kvinna i byn sydde ett par skor åt Karen av gammalt rött tyg. Karen tog på sig dem för första gången den dag då hennes mamma begravdes. Röda skor passade inte på en begravning, men Karen hade inga andra. Hon gick bakom kistan i sina nya skor.
An old woman in the village sewed Karen a pair of shoes out of old red cloth. Karen wore them for the first time on the day her mother was buried. Red shoes were not suitable for a funeral, but Karen had no others. She walked behind the coffin in her new shoes.
