Scene 1 · Intermediate
Soldaten møder en heks
The soldier meets a witch
English translation
A soldier marched along the country road. “Left, right, left, right!” With his knapsack on his back and his sword at his hip, he was on his way home from the war.
English translation
On the road he met a frightening-looking old witch. Her lower lip hung all the way down to her chest. She stopped and said, “Good evening, soldier! What a fine sword and what a big knapsack! You’re a real soldier. So you shall have as much money as you like.”
Danish
»Tak, gamle heks,« svarede soldaten.
English translation
“Thank you, old witch,” replied the soldier.
English translation
“Do you see that big tree?” The witch pointed to the tree beside them. “It’s hollow. Climb to the top, and you’ll find a hole you can lower yourself into. I’ll tie a rope around your waist. When you shout, I’ll pull you back up.”
