Scene 1 · Intermediate

Soldaten möter en häxa

The soldier meets a witch

Swedish

En soldat marscherade längs landsvägen.

English translation

A soldier was marching along the country road.

Swedish

”Vänster, höger, vänster, höger.”

English translation

“Left, right, left, right.”

English translation

With a pack on his back and a sword at his side, he was on his way home from the war.

English translation

Along the way, he met an old witch. She looked dreadful, with a lower lip that hung all the way down to her chest. She stopped when she spotted him.

English translation

“Good evening, soldier. What a fine sword you have, and what a big backpack! You are a real soldier. That's why you shall have as much money as you want.”

Swedish

”Tack, gamla häxa”, svarade han.

English translation

“Thank you, old witch,” he replied.

English translation

The witch pointed to a large tree beside the road. “It's hollow. Climb up and you'll see a hole leading down inside the tree. I'll tie a rope around you so you can lower yourself down. When you call out, I'll pull you back up.”
