Um soldado marchava pela estrada principal, marcando o passo: “Esquerda, direita; esquerda, direita.” Carregava uma mochila nas costas e uma espada ao lado do corpo. Depois de lutar na guerra, estava voltando para casa.
A soldier marched along the main road, keeping time: “Left, right; left, right.” He carried a backpack on his back and a sword at his side. After fighting in the war, he was going home.
No caminho, encontrou uma velha bruxa de aparência assustadora, com o lábio inferior tão comprido que chegava até o peito. Ela o cumprimentou: — Boa noite, soldado. Que bela espada e que mochila grande! Você é um soldado de verdade e vai ter tanto dinheiro quanto quiser.
On the way, he met an old witch with a frightening appearance and a lower lip so long that it reached her chest. She greeted him: “Good evening, soldier. What a fine sword and what a big backpack! You’re a real soldier, and you’ll have as much money as you want.”
— Obrigado, velha bruxa — respondeu ele.
“Thank you, old witch,” he replied.
A bruxa apontou para uma grande árvore ao lado da estrada.
The witch pointed to a large tree beside the road.
— Está vendo aquela árvore? Ela é oca por dentro. Suba até o alto e encontrará uma abertura. Por ali, poderá descer até bem fundo. Vou amarrar uma corda em volta do seu corpo para puxar você de volta quando me chamar.
“Do you see that tree? It’s hollow inside. Climb to the top and you’ll find an opening. You can go down through it, deep underground. I’ll tie a rope around your body so I can pull you back up when you call me.”
