‘Links, rechts; links, rechts.’ Een soldaat marcheerde over de grote weg. Zijn ransel hing op zijn rug en aan zijn zij droeg hij een zwaard. Hij was naar de oorlog geweest en keerde nu naar huis terug.
“Left, right; left, right.” A soldier marched along the main road. His knapsack hung on his back, and he carried a sword at his side. He had been to war and was now returning home.
Onderweg ontmoette hij een oude heks. Ze zag er angstaanjagend uit: haar onderlip hing helemaal tot op haar borst.
On the way, he met an old witch. She looked terrifying: her lower lip hung all the way down to her chest.
‘Goedenavond, soldaat’, zei ze. ‘Wat heb je een mooi zwaard en een grote ransel. Je bent een echte soldaat! Daarom zul je zoveel geld krijgen als je maar wilt.’
“Good evening, soldier,” she said. “What a fine sword and a large knapsack you have. You’re a real soldier! That’s why you’ll get as much money as you want.”
‘Dank je, oude heks’, antwoordde hij.
“Thank you, old witch,” he replied.
Ze wees naar een grote boom naast de weg. ‘Die boom is vanbinnen helemaal hol. Klim naar de top. Daar zit een gat waardoor je diep in de stam kunt zakken. Ik bind een touw om je middel. Als je roept, trek ik je weer omhoog.’
She pointed to a large tree beside the road. “That tree is completely hollow inside. Climb to the top. There’s a hole there that you can climb down through, deep into the trunk. I’ll tie a rope around your waist. When you call out, I’ll pull you back up.”
