Ο βασιλιάς Δαρείος έβαλε εκατόν είκοσι διοικητές να φροντίζουν τις διάφορες περιοχές του βασιλείου του. Πάνω από αυτούς έβαλε τρεις άλλους άντρες. Οι διοικητές έπρεπε να τους δίνουν λογαριασμό για τη δουλειά τους, ώστε ο βασιλιάς να μην παθαίνει ζημιά.
English translation
King Darius appointed 120 governors to take care of the different regions of his kingdom. He placed three other men over them. The governors had to give them an account of their work, so that the king would suffer no loss.

Ένας από τους τρεις άντρες ήταν ο Δανιήλ. Είχε ξεχωριστές ικανότητες και έκανε τη δουλειά του καλύτερα από τους άλλους. Γι' αυτό ο βασιλιάς σκέφτηκε να του δώσει τη διοίκηση όλου του βασιλείου.
English translation
One of the three men was Daniel. He had exceptional abilities and did his work better than the others. So the king considered putting him in charge of the whole kingdom.
