Ο βασιλιάς Δαρείος μοίρασε τη διοίκηση του βασιλείου του σε εκατόν είκοσι τοπικούς διοικητές. Πάνω από αυτούς τοποθέτησε τρεις ανώτατους αξιωματούχους, στους οποίους οι διοικητές έπρεπε να δίνουν αναφορά. Έτσι ο βασιλιάς θα μπορούσε να αποφεύγει τις ζημιές στο βασίλειό του. Ένας από τους τρεις αξιωματούχους ήταν ο Δανιήλ.
English translation
King Darius divided the administration of his kingdom among 120 local governors. Over them he appointed three senior officials, to whom the governors had to report. In this way the king could prevent losses to his kingdom. One of the three officials was Daniel.

Ο Δανιήλ σύντομα ξεχώρισε ανάμεσα σε όλους τους άλλους, χάρη στο εξαιρετικό του πνεύμα. Ο βασιλιάς μάλιστα σκέφτηκε να του αναθέσει τη διοίκηση ολόκληρου του βασιλείου.
English translation
Daniel soon distinguished himself among all the others because of his exceptional spirit. The king even considered putting him in charge of the entire kingdom.
