Król Dariusz mianował stu dwudziestu namiestników, którzy mieli zarządzać prowincjami w całym królestwie. Ich pracę nadzorowało trzech zwierzchników. Jednym z nich był Daniel. Namiestnicy musieli zdawać im sprawę ze swoich działań, aby król nie ponosił żadnych strat.
English translation
King Darius appointed one hundred and twenty governors to administer the provinces throughout the kingdom. Three officials supervised their work. Daniel was one of them. The governors had to report to them on their activities so that the king would suffer no losses.

Daniel wyróżniał się na tle pozostałych zwierzchników i namiestników, ponieważ był w nim niezwykły duch. Król zamierzał więc powierzyć mu władzę nad całym królestwem.
English translation
Daniel stood out among the other officials and governors because there was an extraordinary spirit in him. The king therefore intended to put him in charge of the entire kingdom.
