Scene 1 · Beginner
A plan to leave the children
English translation
Near a large forest lived a poor woodcutter. His two children, Hansel and Gretel, lived with him, along with his wife, who was their stepmother. One year there was not enough food in the land. Now the family did not even have bread to eat every day.
English translation
One night, the father could not sleep. “How will we feed our children?” he asked his wife.
English translation
She wanted to leave the children alone deep in the forest. She and their father would give the children a little bread and light a fire. Then the two adults would leave, and the children would not find their way home.
English translation
“No, I can’t do that,” said the father. “Wild animals will eat my children.”
English translation
But his wife insisted. She said that otherwise all four of them would starve. At last the father agreed, but he was very sad for the children.
