Scene 1 · Intermediate

The miller's boast

English translation

Once upon a time, there was a poor miller who had a beautiful daughter. One day he had to speak to the king. Wanting to appear important, he told him, “I have a daughter who knows how to spin straw into gold.”

English translation

“That is a skill I like very much,” the king replied. “If your daughter is as skilled as you say, bring her to the palace tomorrow. I want to put her skill to the test.”
