Illustration for the scene “The wicked stepmother”

Scene 1 · Intermediate

The wicked stepmother

English translation

Far away, in the land where the swallows go in winter, there lived a king with eleven sons and one daughter, Elisa. Each of his sons went to school with a star on his chest and a sword at his side. They wrote with diamond pencils on golden tablets and learned so easily that everyone could tell they were princes.

English translation

Elisa sat on a crystal stool and leafed through a picture book that had cost as much as half a kingdom.

English translation

The children were happy, but their lives changed when their father married a wicked queen. Their new stepmother did not love them at all, and she made that clear from the very first day. During the wedding celebrations, the children pretended they were welcoming guests. They usually got the leftover sweets and apples.

English translation

This time, however, the queen offered them a cup full of sand and told them to imagine the sand was candy.
