Scene 1 · Intermediate

Plan porzucenia dzieci

A plan to leave the children

Polish

W pobliżu wielkiego lasu mieszkał ubogi drwal z żoną i dwojgiem dzieci: Jasiem i Małgosią.

English translation

Near a great forest lived a poor woodcutter with his wife and two children, Hansel and Gretel. The woodcutter’s wife was their stepmother. The family had very little food, and when a severe shortage swept the country, their father could no longer even get bread for the next day. One night, he lay awake, tossing and turning.

Polish

W końcu westchnął i zwrócił się do żony: – Co się z nami stanie? Jak wyżywimy dzieci, skoro sami nie mamy już co jeść?

English translation

At last he sighed and turned to his wife: “What will become of us? How will we feed the children when we have nothing left to eat ourselves?”

Polish

– Jutro o świcie zaprowadzimy je tam, gdzie las jest najgęstszy – odpowiedziała. – Rozpalimy ognisko, damy im po kawałku chleba, a potem pójdziemy do pracy i zostawimy je same. Nie znajdą drogi powrotnej, więc będziemy mieli je z głowy.

English translation

“At dawn tomorrow, we’ll take them to the thickest part of the forest,” she replied. “We’ll light a fire, give them each a piece of bread, then go off to work and leave them alone. They won’t find their way back, and then we’ll be rid of them.”

Polish

– Nie zrobię tego! – zaprotestował drwal. – Jak mógłbym zostawić własne dzieci w lesie? Przecież przyjdą dzikie zwierzęta i je rozszarpią.

English translation

“I won’t do it!” the woodcutter protested. “How could I leave my own children in the forest? Wild animals will come and tear them to pieces.”

Polish

– Ty głupcze! W takim razie wszyscy czworo umrzemy z głodu. Możesz już przygotować deski na nasze trumny.

English translation

“You fool! Then all four of us will starve to death. You might as well start making the boards for our coffins.”

Polish

Kobieta nie przestawała nalegać, aż wreszcie mąż ustąpił. Mimo zgody na jej plan nadal bardzo cierpiał.

English translation

The woman kept insisting until at last her husband gave in. Even though he agreed to her plan, he was still deeply distressed.

Polish

– Tak mi żal tych biednych dzieci – powiedział.

English translation

“I feel so sorry for those poor children,” he said.
