Illustration for the scene “A plan to leave the children”

Scene 1 · Intermediate

Un plan de a părăsi copiii

A plan to leave the children

English translation

At the edge of a vast forest lived a poor woodcutter with his wife and his two children, Hansel and Gretel. The woman was their stepmother. The family had little food, and when a severe food shortage struck the country, the man could no longer manage to get even their daily bread.

English translation

One night, he tossed and turned in bed, weighed down by worry. At last, he sighed: “What will become of us? How can we feed the children if we have nothing left for ourselves?”

English translation

“I know what we’ll do,” his wife replied. “Tomorrow, before sunrise, we’ll take them deep into the forest. We’ll light a fire for them, give them each a piece of bread, and go off to work. They’ll be left alone and won’t find their way home. Then we’ll be rid of them.”

Romanian

— Nu pot face asta! Cum să-mi las copiii singuri în pădure? Animalele sălbatice i-ar sfâșia!

English translation

“I can’t do that! How could I leave my children alone in the forest? The wild animals would tear them to pieces!”

English translation

“Then all four of us will starve to death,” the woman said. “You can start preparing the boards for our coffins now!”

English translation

She scolded him and kept insisting until the man gave in. Still, he couldn’t hide his grief.

English translation

“I feel so sorry for the poor children,” he said.
