Der Plan, die Kinder auszusetzen
A plan to leave the children
English translation
At the edge of a large forest lived a poor woodcutter with his wife and his two children. The boy was called Hansel, and the girl Gretel. The woman was their stepmother. The family had little to eat. Then a terrible famine swept across the land, and their father could no longer even provide their daily bread.
English translation
One night, he lay awake, tossing and turning with worry. “What will become of us?” he asked his wife. “How are we supposed to feed the children when we have nothing left ourselves?”
English translation
“Tomorrow morning, we’ll take them deep into the forest,” she replied. “We’ll light a fire there and give each of them a piece of bread. Then we’ll go to work and leave them behind. They won’t find their way home, and we’ll be rid of them.”
English translation
Their father protested against the plan. “No, I can’t do that. I can’t just leave my children alone in the forest! The wild animals would tear them to pieces.”
English translation
“You fool!” the woman said. “If they stay here, all four of us will starve. You might as well start preparing the boards for our coffins.” She wouldn’t leave him alone until he finally agreed. But even though he gave in, he felt terribly sorry for his children.
