Un plan para abandonar a los niños

A plan to leave the children

English translation

Near a great forest lived a poor woodcutter with his wife and his two children, Hansel and Gretel. The woman was the children’s stepmother. The family had little to eat, and when food shortages spread across the region, the man could no longer even get their daily bread.

English translation

One night, he tossed and turned in bed, unable to sleep from worry.

Spanish

«¿Qué va a ser de nosotros? —le preguntó a su mujer—. ¿Cómo vamos a alimentar a nuestros hijos si no tenemos suficiente ni para nosotros?».

English translation

“What will become of us?” he asked his wife. “How are we going to feed our children if we don’t have enough even for ourselves?”

English translation

“Early tomorrow, we’ll take them deep into the forest,” she replied. “We’ll light a fire for them and give them a piece of bread. Then we’ll go off to work and leave them alone. They won’t find their way back, and we’ll be rid of them.”

English translation

The man refused. He couldn’t bear to think of his children alone, exposed to wild animals.

English translation

“Then all four of us will starve to death,” the woman retorted. “You might as well get the boards ready for our coffins.”

English translation

She kept pressuring him until he agreed. Even so, the father said he felt very sorry for his poor children.
