Scene 1 · Intermediate
A rich man’s wife became seriously ill. When she realized that she would soon die, she called her only daughter to her bedside.
“Dear child, do good and believe in God. Then he will always protect you, and I will watch over you from heaven and stay close to you.”
Then she closed her eyes and died. The girl went to her mother’s grave every day to weep. She held on to her faith and continued to be kind to others. In winter, snow covered the grave like a white blanket. By the time the spring sun had melted it, the girl’s father had remarried.
