Η γυναίκα ενός πλούσιου ανθρώπου αρρώστησε βαριά. Όταν κατάλαβε πως πλησίαζε το τέλος της, κάλεσε τη μοναχοκόρη της κοντά στο κρεβάτι της.
A rich man’s wife fell gravely ill. When she realized that her end was near, she called her only daughter to her bedside.
«Αγαπημένο μου παιδί, να είσαι καλή και να έχεις πίστη στον Θεό. Τότε εκείνος θα σε προστατεύει πάντα, κι εγώ θα σε κοιτάζω από τον ουρανό και θα βρίσκομαι κοντά σου».
“My dear child, be good and have faith in God. Then he will always protect you, and I will watch over you from heaven and be close to you.”
Ύστερα έκλεισε τα μάτια της και πέθανε. Η κοπέλα πήγαινε καθημερινά στον τάφο της μητέρας της και έκλαιγε, χωρίς να χάνει την καλοσύνη και την πίστη της. Τον χειμώνα το χιόνι σκέπασε τον τάφο σαν λευκό σεντόνι. Ως την άνοιξη, όταν ο ήλιος έλιωσε πάλι το χιόνι, ο πατέρας της είχε παντρευτεί άλλη γυναίκα.
Then she closed her eyes and died. The girl went to her mother’s grave every day and wept, without losing her kindness or her faith. In winter, snow covered the grave like a white sheet. By spring, when the sun had melted the snow again, her father had married another woman.
