A plan to leave the children
English translation
At the edge of a great forest lived a poor woodcutter with his two children and his wife, who was their stepmother. The boy was called Hansel and the girl Gretel. The family had very little food. When food began to run short throughout the country, the father could no longer provide even their daily bread.
English translation
One night he tossed and turned in bed, full of anxiety. He sighed and said to his wife:
“What are we to do? How can we feed the poor children when we have nothing even for ourselves?”
“I have an idea, my husband,” she replied. “Tomorrow morning we will take them deep into the forest.”
English translation
“We will light a fire for them, give them each a piece of bread, and then leave for work. They will not be able to find their way home, and so we will be rid of them.”
English translation
“No, I cannot do that!” said the father. “How can I leave my children all alone in the forest? Wild animals will come and tear them to pieces.”
English translation
“Fool!” his wife said. “Then all four of us will starve. You had better start getting the boards ready for our coffins now.”
English translation
She insisted so much that he finally gave in. Even so, the thought of the children tormented him.
English translation
“The poor children! I feel so sorry for them,” he said.
