Scene 1 · Beginner
Karen's mother's funeral
English translation
Once upon a time, there was a poor little girl named Karen. In summer she walked barefoot. In winter she wore big wooden shoes that made her little feet turn red.
English translation
A shoemaker’s wife in the village took pity on her. She took some old pieces of red cloth and made her a pair of shoes. They were not very pretty, but she had made them out of kindness.
English translation
Karen wore them for the first time at her mother’s funeral. The red color was not fitting for such a sad day, but she had no other shoes. So she walked behind the coffin in them.
