Scene 1 · Intermediate
The soldier meets a witch
English translation
A soldier marched steadily down the road: “Left, right; left, right.” He had his pack on his back and his sword at his side. He had been to war and was now returning home.
English translation
On the road he met a frightening-looking old witch. Her lower lip hung down to her chest. The witch stopped him.
English translation
“Good evening, soldier! What a fine sword and what a big pack you have! You’re a real soldier, and now you shall have as much money as you want.”
English translation
“Thank you, old witch,” he replied.
English translation
The witch pointed to a large tree standing beside them.
English translation
“Do you see it? It’s hollow inside. If you climb to the top, you’ll find a hole. You can climb down through it deep into the tree. I’ll tie a rope around you, and as soon as you call me, I’ll pull you up again.”
