Żołnierz wracał z wojny do domu. Szedł główną drogą z plecakiem na plecach i szablą u boku. Po drodze spotkał starą, strasznie wyglądającą czarownicę.
A soldier was on his way home from the war. He walked along the main road with a backpack on his back and a saber at his side. On the way, he met an old, frightening-looking witch.
– Dobry wieczór, żołnierzu – powiedziała. – Masz piękną szablę i duży plecak. Możesz też zdobyć tyle pieniędzy, ile zechcesz.
“Good evening, soldier,” she said. “You have a beautiful saber and a large backpack. You can also get as much money as you want.”
Żołnierz podziękował jej, a ona wskazała wielkie drzewo obok drogi. Wyjaśniła, że drzewo jest puste w środku. Na jego szczycie był otwór, przez który można było zejść głęboko pod ziemię.
The soldier thanked her, and she pointed to a huge tree beside the road. She explained that the tree was hollow inside. At its top was an opening through which one could go deep underground.
– Obwiążę cię liną – dodała czarownica. – Kiedy zawołasz, wyciągnę cię z powrotem.
“I’ll tie a rope around you,” the witch added. “When you call out, I’ll pull you back up.”
