En soldat var på vei hjem fra krigen. Han gikk langs veien med en ransel på ryggen og et sverd ved hoften.
A soldier was on his way home from the war. He walked along the road with a backpack on his back and a sword at his hip.
På veien møtte han en gammel heks. Hun så skremmende ut, men hun stanset og hilste på ham.
On the road he met an old witch. She looked frightening, but she stopped and greeted him.
«God kveld, soldat. Du kan få så mye penger du vil», sa hun og pekte på et stort tre. «Treet er hult. Klatre til toppen, så finner du et hull ned i treet. Jeg binder et tau rundt deg. Når du roper, trekker jeg deg opp igjen.»
“Good evening, soldier. You can have as much money as you want,” she said, pointing to a large tree. “The tree is hollow. Climb to the top and you’ll find a hole leading down inside the tree. I’ll tie a rope around you. When you shout, I’ll pull you back up.”
