Ein Soldat geht auf der Landstraße nach Hause. Er kommt aus dem Krieg zurück. Auf dem Rücken trägt er seinen Tornister, eine große Tasche. An seiner Seite hängt ein Schwert.
A soldier walks home along the country road. He is returning from the war. He carries his pack, a large bag, on his back. A sword hangs at his side.
Unterwegs trifft er eine alte Hexe. Sie sieht unheimlich aus, und ihre Unterlippe hängt bis auf die Brust.
On the way, he meets an old witch. She looks frightening, and her lower lip hangs down to her chest.
„Guten Abend, Soldat“, sagt sie. „Du hast ein schönes Schwert und einen großen Tornister. Du kannst so viel Geld bekommen, wie du willst.“
“Good evening, soldier,” she says. “You have a fine sword and a large pack. You can get as much money as you want.”
Der Soldat bedankt sich. Die Hexe zeigt ihm einen großen Baum neben der Straße. Innen ist der Baum hohl. Der Soldat soll hinaufklettern und durch ein Loch tief in den Baum hinuntersteigen. Die Hexe will ihm ein Seil um den Körper binden. Wenn er ruft, kann sie ihn damit wieder nach oben ziehen.
The soldier thanks her. The witch shows him a large tree beside the road. The tree is hollow inside. He is supposed to climb up and then climb down through a hole deep into the tree. The witch wants to tie a rope around his body. If he calls out, she can use it to pull him back up.
