Egy katona hazafelé ment az országúton. A háborúból jött, hátán hátizsákot vitt, az oldalán pedig kard lógott. Útközben találkozott egy csúnya, öreg boszorkánnyal.
A soldier was walking home along the road. He had come from the war, carrying a backpack on his back and a sword at his side. On the way, he met an ugly old witch.
– Jó estét, katona! – köszönt a boszorkány. – Szép kardod van, és nagy hátizsákod. Annyi pénzt szerezhetsz, amennyit csak akarsz.
“Good evening, soldier!” the witch greeted him. “You have a fine sword and a big backpack. You can get as much money as you want.”
A katona megköszönte az ajánlatot. A boszorkány egy nagy fára mutatott mellettük. A fa belül üres volt.
The soldier thanked her for the offer. The witch pointed to a big tree beside them. The tree was hollow inside.
– Mássz fel a tetejére! Ott találsz egy lyukat, azon át le tudsz menni a fa belsejébe. Kötelet kötök a derekadra. Ha felkiáltasz, visszahúzlak.
“Climb to the top! You’ll find a hole there, and you can climb down through it into the tree. I’ll tie a rope around your waist. If you call out, I’ll pull you back up.”
