Un soldat se întorcea acasă după război. Mergea pe drum cu ranița în spate și sabia la șold. În cale i-a apărut o vrăjitoare bătrână, care arăta înspăimântător.
A soldier was returning home after the war. He walked along the road with his knapsack on his back and his sword at his side. An old witch appeared in his path. She looked frightening.
— Bună seara, soldatule! i-a spus ea. Ai o sabie frumoasă și o raniță mare. Vei avea câți bani dorești!
“Good evening, soldier!” she said. “You have a fine sword and a large knapsack. You’ll have as much money as you want!”
Soldatul i-a mulțumit, iar vrăjitoarea i-a arătat un copac mare. Copacul era gol pe dinăuntru, iar sus avea o gaură. Pe acolo, soldatul putea să coboare până adânc sub copac.
The soldier thanked her, and the witch showed him a large tree. The tree was hollow inside, with a hole at the top. Through it, the soldier could climb down deep beneath the tree.
— Îți voi lega o frânghie în jurul trupului, a explicat vrăjitoarea. Când mă strigi, te trag înapoi sus.
“I’ll tie a rope around your body,” the witch explained. “When you call to me, I’ll pull you back up.”
